CCC Team rider Attila Valter put the finishing touches on a dominant team showing at the Tour de Hongrie stage race, winning the final stage and taking the overall victory at the five-day UCI Europe Tour race.

Valter’s Stage 5 win made it four of five stage victories for CCC Team following his teammate Jakub Mareczko’s all-out blitz of the sprint stages. Mareczko won Stages 2, 3 and 4 and secured the points classification win. On the final day of the race, the Italian sprinter stepped aside as the team shifted its attention to the general classification.

Stage 5, the queen stage of the race, covered 188km and about 3500 meters of climbing between Miskolc and the summit finish in Gyöngyös. Valter had finished third at the Tour de Hongrie last year and was gunning for the win on the difficult Stage 5. The 22-year-old Hungarian was extra motivated racing in his home country.

“I felt like I could get this result today and the way we have raced over the last few days made me feel even more confident,” said Valter, who earned the win on his TCR Advanced SL Disc bike with a CADEX WheelSystem. “I knew every meter of the last climb and I knew what I needed to do. I waited a bit longer to attack than last year when I went too early and wasn’t successful, so this year I was more patient.”

The team helped cover any attacks and put Valter, who wore the new Giant Rev Pro helmet, in position for the decisive final climb to the finish. Łukasz Wisniowski put in a big effort with about 10km to go that whittled down the lead group, and Valter then made his move inside the final kilometer to take the win.

Valter, the current Hungarian men’s national time trial champion in both the Elite and Under-23 categories, said his first major pro win as a member of CCC Team was extra special in his own country.

“It’s been amazing racing on home soil and even though the situation is different this year, I have still taken a lot of strength and motivation from hearing people cheering for me all week,” he said. “It feels really special to get this win, especially after coming close and just missing out last year.”
