The Canadian MTB website posted a review of the new Charge Pro XC shoe, giving it high marks for its comfort, power transfer and the fine-tune fit provided by its dual Boa closure system.
Tester Sam Cohen detailed some of the technologies that make the pro-level Charge Pro a good choice for performance-minded XC, cyclocross and gravel racers and riders. He described the updates to its ExoBeam carbon sole, which now features a dual-beam construction. “The heel’s split beam gives some flexibility, lending the shoe better traction if you have to run or walk off-bike,” he wrote. “The stiffness offered by the carbon-fiber ExoBeam provided great power transfer, but there was enough torsional flexibility due to the dual-beam configuration that in never made the shoe uncomfortable. For those who race cyclocross or find themselves off the bike, this torsional flexibility is a real bonus.”
Cohen found that the combination of the Charge Pro’s ExoWrap upper and Boa closures gave it a close, comfortable fit. “The top Boa dial adjusts general fit, as it would on most other shoes,” he wrote. “A second Boa adjusts Giant’s ExoWrap upper, tightening the upper with wires that run all the way around the foot. This pulls the shoe up towards the arch of your foot, instead of squishing your foot down onto the sole of the shoe. While it might sound like a minor detail it provides significantly more support and makes the Charge Pro more comfortable on long rides.”
Summing it up, Cohen wrote: “These shoes are the most comfortable and one of the best-performing cross country and cyclocross race shoes I have worn.”
